European Parliament calls for 2011 as Year of Volunteering

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 22nd Jul 2008

Elspeth Attwooll MEP is celebrating the European Parliament's adoption of a written declaration on volunteering, which celebrates the 100 million people who volunteer each year, and calls for 2011 to be declared the official European Year of Volunteering in recognition of this shared spirit.

The Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland said:

"I'm delighted that the required number of members have signed for the declaration to be adopted.

Volunteering makes an enormous contribution to the economic and social well-being, in communities all over Scotland, Britain and the European Union.

It's important that this shared spirit is recognised, and that the momentum generated so far continues".
